Language of War is a discussion that will be led by Victoria Fé, a scholar who specializes in philosophy of language. It is mainly based on Lakoff and Johnson’s theory that our abstract thinking is, by necessity, metaphorical. We will discuss everyday metaphors we live by, without realizing it, and how this mapping mechanism allows us to shape our higher order narratives into different conceptual frames - including the war narratives we get exposed to in mass media.

We will, in particular, cover the cluster of State metaphors and conceptual linguistic frameworks related to War. The goal of this talk is to raise awareness about the existence of those different frames and use critical thinking to modify our reactions to alternative narratives. In today’s world, when news spreads like fire due to the abundance of online sources, we need to stay alert to the fact that whatever we hear or read about is written by someone with their own agenda. We need to be aware of alternatives to the narratives we are exposed to because every coin has its reverse, and the truth, as they say, is out there.

This webinar is conducted via the API, a non-profit organization focusing on bringing philosophy to the general public. More information about the institute and what it does can be found here:
